Broken By Design – Public Housing Maintenance in the Kimberley

Public housing tenants across the Kimberley are living in homes they describe as unsafe, unreliable and unfit for purpose.

Based on feedback from 166 tenants, Broken By Design found widespread mould, leaking roofs, electrical faults and plumbing failures, with nearly 70% of respondents still waiting for repairs.

The report argues that the current maintenance model is failing tenants and calls for a shift to community-led maintenance that keeps jobs, skills and investment in the Kimberley while delivering safer, healthier homes.
